How to create a secure shopping centre for shop staff and visitors

Frölunda Torg is a shopping centre located in the southwest part of Gothenburg, Sweden, inaugurated in 1966. Over the years, it has expanded and today serves as a meeting point for residents in nearby areas with around 200 shops, restaurants, and cafés.

As a public space with many people moving around, security work is a vital element. Frölunda Torg has long worked in a structured manner with safety and certifications, achieving the highest security certification a shopping centre can attain. This serves as proof of the centre’s active efforts with preventative measures, security routines, and other initiatives to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

– We work systematically on security and closely collaborate with the police, authorities, and other actors in our nearby area to create a secure shopping centre and meeting point, explains Tobias Heurlin, Deputy Centre Manager at Frölunda Torg shopping centre.

Alarms enabling swift local response

At Frölunda Torg shopping centre, panic alarms with direct communication to the centre’s security hub are installed. Either through fixed alarm buttons or portable alarm devices carried by shop staff.

Using the alarm device, shop staff can silently alert the security hub, which immediately identifies the shop the alarm comes from and deploys a security officer to the site. Through swift local intervention, the centre avoids escalation of situations.

The alarm devices are used daily for both major and minor incidents, and they are a tool for creating a sense of security and safety for shop staff.

– It may not always be a critical event but could be an unsettling situation or someone working alone who needs assistance, Heurlin explains.
